I'd like the "could you make that film today" conversation to encompass movies without the n-word. Could you make City Lights? The Wizard of Oz? The Third Man? Wild Strawberries? 400 Blows?

Cancel culture wouldn’t let you make The General today I can tell you that!!

There should be a PETA for old locomotives. But yeah, I see what you mean. (For the benefit of the uninitiated: it's set in the US Civil War, and Buster - a locomotive engineer - fights for the South.)

Nah you can only do a silent film as a gimmick now, e.g. The Artist. It's all so self-referential (to cinema history, that is) that it doesn't have the simple joy of watching an old silent comedy, nor the technical inventiveness of the silent era's more ambitious productions.
-
The impression I had of The Artist was that it was the work of someone who, no matter how much research he made, had no understanding of the appeal of silent films.

Could you make "Eraserhead"? "Ubu Roi"? "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari"? "Train Approaching Station"?

This film couldn't be re-made due to the absence of the necessary talent, not the nature of the content. Also, there's no need to re-make these classic films. The originals stand up. Consider the horrible remake of Sabrina. How was that good?
