YIMBYism is one of those things that makes sense in theory until you encounter the advocates.https://twitter.com/CaseyBerk/status/1489728929686503433 …

online yimby culture is toxic. I don’t mean bullying—I mean calling everything you like “based.” please stop. learn another word.

Online YIMBY discourse can be obnoxious, but what significant political faction—whether issue-based or candidate/party-based—isn’t this true of? Unfortunately this just seems like a feature of political culture in the 21st century.

I don't participate in dogpiles but the YIMBY discourse is combative in large part because its pushing back on what was a near-universal, across-the-political-spectrum (right and left) bias against development for years.

I've voiced support in public meetings for apartments in my neighborhood and I've been doxxed, accused of being paid or that I do not belong here (I'm gay and this is a historically queer neighborhood), etc. I don't see why YIMBYs need to apologize for being pushy.

I grew up in a town that became prohibitively expensive because it refused to grow and wanted to become a museum-like playground for rich New York weekenders so I also can't "go back where I came from." YIMBYism is personal for me because NIMBYism is a dead end.

I hope I'm not taken as praising NIMBYs! I just not sure the public face of YIMBY does a disservice to stuff I'm broadly sympathetic with.

Social media is not "the public face of YIMBY." The public face are those who show up to council meetings and neighborhood associations.
