This seems like a very good topic. I can't say whether the book is good. When did conservatives start to cry media 'bias' as a matter of course? (Whether they had half a point or not.) Did conservatives complain about media bias in favor of FDR? 1/https://twitter.com/MattGrossmann/status/1489051323660128257 …

Negative coverage of Goldwater’s campaign convinced the conservative movement that the media was hostile, becoming a critical juncture in the development of conservative media distrust & the move to ideological alternatives https://rowman.com/ISBN/9781793620798/Barry-Goldwater-Distrust-in-Media-and-Conservative-Identity-The-Perception-of-Liberal-Bias-in-the-News …

There's a version of this left-wing media bias critique that goes back to Burke: "“whilst thousands of great cattle… chew the cud and are silent, pray do not imagine that those [grasshoppers] who make the noise are the only inhabitants of the field” 2/

The 'people' are good and sound, it's just the opinion-makers, the chatting class, the philosophes, who are bad and unsound. So obviously that's the media. But it surely must be right that, after Goldwater, American conservatives start to feel more on the outs. 3/

Did Nixon complain about liberal media bias in JFK's favor, in 1960? Surely so. But, to some extent, both sides always complain that they are getting a raw deal. Everyone always 'works the refs'. But it becomes more a part of conservative identity after Goldwater. 4/

One interesting data point: In Little Orphan Annie from 1920s-1960s, newspapermen always shown to be good (and embodiment of conservative value of independence, skepticism to liberalism). If Gray had continued into Nixon/Agnew era he might have changed.

Gray was working for McCormick's Tribune, and there were many conservative newspapers around the country. I wonder if seeing "the media" as a unified enemy came in with TV and the narrow range of options there.
