I have been informed by quite a few trans people that this is a very common argument by transphobes! I do wonder if it's simple linguistic confusion of "transgender" with "transhuman," but whatever the explanation, they hear it often!

On the other hand, more recent SF has been rather more accepting of things like trans-sexuality. For example, John Varley’s Eight Worlds stories and novels (ok, not exactly recent, but for old guys like me it is) where you’d switch sex type on the regular.
