Was The Color of Money the first example of a very belated but direct sequel to a movie, starring the original lead? I am not thinking of stuff like James Bond where new entries were being generated regularly. I mean stuff where there was a major time gap.

Preston Sturges The Sin of Harold Diddlebock (1947) is a sequel to a 1920s Harold Lloyd comedy.

I don’t remember all the details but doesn’t he have a different name from one film to the next? I know they continue the story but, in The Freshman, his name is Harold Lamb.

Yeah, different name but it's supposed to be the same guy. Sadly a mediocre film despite having two geniuses work on it.
