Finding out that Tolkien was a soft Wagnerite and borrowed themes from the Nibelungen tetralogy (ring, dragon guarding gold) has only strengthened my belief in the thesis that the last LOTR instalment is just a neo-medieval rendition of Operation Barbarossa in which Hitler wins.

This is made doubly-distressing by the fact that Wagner's Ring Cycle is a fundamentally anti-fascist work, unlike Tolkien's reactionary borrowings
