They were (and even achieved 2 poll leads for the first time since 2016), but the prospect of a right wing victory drove further left voters to support the Socialist party. Also, turnout was much higher than expected, which has seemingly favoured the Socialists
It kind of did, just not through the main right-wing party. The neolibs and the far-right populists had great results.
The left wing bloc was nicely punished however. At least Portugal has low thresholds to get into parliament
Portugal isn't bipartisan. The centre-left PS won the election, but the balance of power between the three right-wing parties and the three left-wing parties changed fundamentally towards the right.
This, unfortunately.
42% Socialist, 28% mainstream Right, a few small parties, the Greens lose all their seats.
The Trump-Like Party Chega ramped up from 1 to 12 congressmen, the neolibs party IL got themselves +7 add-ons to the single fella they elected in 19’. I would call that a small victory to the right-wing despite the centre-left overall triumph.
