It's very hard to tell what causes the most damage. GMO crops can save countles people from starvation, and it's very hard to run counterfactuals about what would or wouldn't happen without them in a given place. Same with the ? of the exact causal effect of vaccine misinfohttps://twitter.com/jbrenner2000/status/1487480454198476804 …

Distrust of the medical establishment isn't also multicausal? No way the rejection of CDC guidance might have any connection to the opioid epidemic, or the collapse of our educational system, or increasing polarization driven by the sorts of inflammatory claims The Nation made?

Distrust of medical establishment is often warranted and can lead to good things (i.e. critiques of pharma monopolies.) That's pretty distinct from peddling quack remedies.

You think it's "obvious" that people are dying because of what Joe Rogan's guests say on his show, but not at all obvious that people rioted in Kenosha because the media told them that a cop had shot an innocent man who was just trying to break up a fight?

I think the worst misinformation released in the last two years is "the vaccine will prevent transmission". It's lead to an entire class of rabid people that will happily force others to take a medical risk, because they believe outdated misinfo that was incredibly unlikely.
