      1. I'm struck by this ignorant line from @sullydish: "If you have to teach Nikole Hannah-Jones, add a section on Zora Neale Hurston." Assumption is Hurston isn't being taught. In fact, she is & her recuperation as writer was pushed by the very people Sullivan denounces as wokepic.twitter.com/tBp560g65W

      2. "If you have to teach Nikole Hannah-Jones, add a section on Zora Neale Hurston" -- teach where? Hurston is mainly taught in English departments, Hannah-Jones would be taught in history & social sciences. Why link the two, except they are both black women?

      3. Some of Hurston's writings on slave testimony & on black folklore is also taught in anthropology in & history but since her work is decades old it would be taught in a very different way than someone synthesizing contemporary research like Hannah-Jones.

      4. Exactly on point, Sullivan is trying to create a divide between Hurston & contemporary liberal and leftist Black thinkers which does not exist.https://twitter.com/EricMGarcia/status/1487169326658555906 …

If Sully had actually read Kendi's book, he'd know he praises Zora Neale Hurston in Stamped from the Beginning. Also, when I was at @UNC, I remember a bunch of those supposedly "woke" students were pushing to rename a building named for a Klansman for her. https://twitter.com/HeerJeet/status/1487168899372048387 …

      5. Here's how Sullivan's little mind worked: "I have Hannah-Jones, so I need to counterpose her with a Black female rightwinger. Who, who? Candice Owens...no that won't work ... Diamond and Silk ... fuck no ... um, let's go with Zora Neale Hurston ... she's dead but whatever."

          6. It's true by the way that Zora Neale Hurston was a Republican but many Black Americans were during her lifetime (1891-1960) when GOP was the less racist of the 2 major parties. She has nothing to do with the scientific racism Sullivan and Charles Murray promote.

Jeet Heer Retweeted The Wreck of the Ella Fitzgerald

          7. And to be clear, Sullivan's line about teaching both Hannah-Jones and Hurston is undermined by just a little push-back from the far-right scare merchant who is promoting the anti-CRT bogeyman.https://twitter.com/StoicalSophist/status/1487171313986793474 …

This is the same trick Sully et al use with MLK or indeed any early queer or feminist activist: THEY were ok but NOW the people (H-J, e.g.) have gone too far. But of course that's what Sully would have been saying THEN as well -- the present fight always comes TOO SOON.

It's an attempt to present themselves as not-racist relative to the 1960s (or 1920s) as though that's proof that they're not-racist NOW. But somehow the bus of progress always runs ahead of them, and they are never not-racist in the actual present. A bridge too far.
