America is obsessed with "happy" endings...I was about 10 before I read a book that didn't have one. It was the Diary of Anne Frank. When not everyone was saved, I was more confused than anything else. That was my introduction to the fact that real life has suffering + injustice.

I now recognize how privileged I was not to have been exposed to any real suffering or injustice in my actual early childhood - a privilege my peers in, say, Bosnia or Rwanda or Central America, or even in certain parts of my own city, didn't have.
