IMO a “theory type” need not be terribly “enterprising” to connect the fear of contaminating children (with sexuality + depictions of mass death) to anxieties about the Jews, figured in the text as rodents, disease vectors to be exterminated — during a pandemic. @CoreyRobinpic.twitter.com/LaOszPnI3m

And anyway, since when are we taking gentile “prudishness” at its word when it comes to Jews and sex and death?

Sam, have you read the entire transcript of the school board hearing? I'm well aware of the analysis you're referring to, but I just don't see the evidence in the transcript, and not in contest. If you've read it and still think the analysis holds true, so be it.

Gotcha. No I haven’t read it. I’ll take a look. I am prepared to be surprised by how thoroughly the context rules out this reading.

I don't know. I can't picture reading anything remotely like Maus in the rural red state school I went to. Not because it would have been banned, but because somethign as "graphic" (in both senses) as that would never have been put on the curriculum in the first place.

I remember teachers fast forwarding through "the naked parts" of Roots, which was its own kind of inadvertent comedy

which is to say, the anti-CRT thing is current and new and we're all hypersensitive to it, but "we must protect the precious children from upsetting material" is such a long-running and banal reactionary project

Sure, parental hypersensitiveness old story. But recent surge in graphic novels particularly from minority groups (LGBTQ, POC) being challenged more (something librarians have remarked on) suggests this should be linked to current juncture, not just older pattern.

I would just say that there are multiple avenues of causation for this very banal "rural school board bites curriculum" story. To know more than supposition, one would have to have more information.

I agree. Although I think minutes of meeting are suggestive
