I just bought this book for my fourth-grader, at his request. I gave him a talk about how the subject matter would be tough but also important to reckon with. He's handling it pretty well.

I would think that's what would be expected. Like O'Brien to Winston Smith "You will be hollow. We shall squeeze you empty, and then we shall fill you with ourselves"

You know what's upsetting? Kids in schools being subjected to antisemitism by their peers. That's not happening in a book, that's happening in reality.

That Maus is distressing is precisely why it's effective and important. But for the book banners, that's not the core of the issue. It's not what lies beneath their nation that things like this and "CRT" uncomfortably reminds them of, /1

but what lies beneath themselves. It's not that they don't want to be reminded of their nation's history, they never did and continue to refuse to acknowledge and reconcile it in the first place. /x
