      1. Don't Look Up is super popular -- one of the most widely watched movies in the streaming era. On the other hand, the critical response has mostly been "meh" to hostile.https://twitter.com/FilmUpdates/status/1478470117914816519 …

      2. Not unusual for audiences & critics to react differently to movies, nor for filmmakers to use hostile criticism to drum up attention. What's more interesting in way politics feeds into divide on movie.

      3. Like Michael Moore before him, Adam McKay might be finding out that in political filmmaking there's a trade-off between critical praise & reaching a mass audience. @DavidKlion & I talk about Don't Look Up & McKay's career.https://jeetheer.substack.com/p/podcast-critics-are-down-on-dont?r=bh54&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=email …

One friend of mine who doesn’t like the movie or Sirota has unleashed an unreasonable and unusual amount of criticism of this movie, the sort of thing I never ever see directed at anybody but politicians and billionaires.

But an interesting dichotomy of critical praise. He’s more prestigious than ever. Don’t Look Up could get multiple Oscar nominations including best picture and original screenplay. Vice got a lot of nominations despite even being more disliked than Don’t Look Up.

Imo the movie was extremely on the nose, and not all that good as a satire. (And yeah, I'm someone who realizes that AGW is a fact and cares about cineastic qualities.) I believe that what we "need" (if we need any of this) is a climate change version of IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE.

Does anyone propose being weird and klunky could be understood as Brechtian alienation? I haven't seen it, but I can see viewer requirements might be different

Having tried it for a while, I felt like one of the only actual effects of satire was assuring people they were not alone thinking things were messed up, so I can see where a divide would happen generally.

Netflix heavily promoted a single movie with recognizable stars when half the planet was home looking for something to do with their relatives that involved everybody at least looking at the same screen for a couple hours, in lieu of anything else. Boredom is the great winner.

I think Adam is basically taking the @JimGaffigan approach, which is "I can entertain people and also say what I want to say. I'm not going to cowtow to people who I probably wouldn't like in real life." Also, do you think he wouldn't have been familiar with that prior?

In all of the back and forth I've read/heard about the movie's reception, I've noticed very little engagement with it just as a movie. That's my biggest beef with it; as a movie, I just didn't think it was very good. Bad script, shoddy directing, uneven tone-Not a very good movie

At least people got talking about what it means. I didn't think it was a great film either, but it was still a worthwhile project.

I enjoyed Don't Look Up, but thought it was a little too blunt and heavy-handed.. then it occurred to me that ppl myopically criticizing the delivery of glaringly bad news as "too blunt/heavy-handed" was.. kind of the entire point.
