      1. "Reactionary centrism" is a bulls-eye description of a powerful political faction that is claims to be trying to save the Biden presidency but is actually working to capsize it: Manchin, Sinema, Friedman, David Brooks, many flying the "popularist" banner.https://twitter.com/tzimmer_history/status/1481747064275021834 …

The fever dream of reactionary centrism: A center-right re-alignment of American politics, all in the name of defending democracy against Trump - while also upholding the traditional order against the forces of multiracial pluralism. Wow. pic.twitter.com/v6CLmVhWjb

      2. This Brooks tweet is a nice encapsulation of the project of reactionary centrism, which is to get Biden to throw overboard the progressive agenda & govern as a center right president.https://twitter.com/nytdavidbrooks/status/1481774425813008384 …

      Jeet Heer added,

Today is the day for Biden to begin revamping his presidency in a more centrist direction. There’s no path forward for a leftish agenda.

      3. There's a lot to be said about reactionary centrism, one of which is that these are sore winners. They've gotten everything they wanted: Biden as president, Machin as veto on agenda, national unity & norms rhetoric. If things are a mess, maybe look in the mirror?

          4. Also reactionary centrists are a big part of the reason why the world is the way it is: Brooks & Friedman were both big advocates of Iraq War & unlimited globalization that produced the current anti-systems politics. So we should listen to them?

          5. Brooks to be sure does a show of his characteristic chin-stroking remorse about his conservative past, but its only superficial and neglects his own responsibility for the rise of authoritarianism. @bellye66 & I talk about this here:https://jeetheer.substack.com/p/podcast-david-brooks-delusional-nostalgia?r=bh54&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=email …

It's weird how the NYT has an entire stable of conservative thinkers whose constituency has essentially vanished. The politically homeless. It's part of the paper's larger inability to confront a changed landscape.

But the problem runs deeper than that, because their irrelevance signifies that they were wrong the whole time - not about the country, about their own movement. About the perspective they represented. You'd think that would disqualify a thinker's political voice. Nope.

I was talking to a Romney-McMullin-Biden voter. She’s not down on BBB or even the infrastructure bill which she views as pork. What she does want is voting rights to pass. She’s very unsatisfied with school closings (her kids school is open) and members of congress trading stocks.

She wants democracy reform but also is very persuaded by the stock trade ban Republicans supposedly support. Anyway take from that what you will.

Things are not a mess for them, though. The mess for everyone else is the material and rhetorical leverage they apply to reinforce already hegemonic ideas

For 30 years, Republicans would pass racist legislation that was race-neutral on its face; we would call out the racism, they would go ballistic; then the party got jacked by a racist-game over-but there is a small minority who didn't get the memo. Most of them write for NYT.

“Lucrative conformism” perhaps a helpful synonym for reactionary centrism.https://twitter.com/narosenblum/status/1330863279711920129 …

          Noah Rosenblum @narosenblum
“This is the legacy of the lucrative conformism noted by Alfred Kazin and Czeslaw Milosz. In that sense, we are looking not so much at independent thinkers as an intellectual service class.”
