1. Mailer pseudo-kerfuffle follows a pattern: there's a type of male writer who tends to be a star when alive & then goes into reputational decline soon after death: macho, two-fisted, sometimes substance abusing: Hemingway, Hunter Thompson, Mailer, Harlan Ellison, Hitchens.

wondering if most reputations don’t go into decline posthumously in some sense? Without the author himself around to talk/prop them up? Or maybe that’s just the Jan 2022 mood talking

Go into decline after death, and then—sometimes— get picked up by later generations. We can never know.

Exactly. Melville and Nella Larsen were both utterly obscure and near forgotten when they died.
