Missed this one. Hemingway's work was everywhere straight through the '80's at least, clearly didn't depend on his being alive and fishing. I recall Thompson, by contrast, as *all* image, no real writing, well before he actually died. That's where I can't see the commonality.

Many of these have reputations and influence as journalists and within the intertwined relationship between journalism & literature (unique to i20th century American tradition?). That they are men is a consequence of political fact; I think perhaps separate from merit or appeal.
