I had on my "To Write" list a newsletter thing that was basically "Climate Change Is Not A Comet Strike," basically just pointing out how broken an analogy this is, but it looks like Eric is making the same (BRILLIANT) points here.https://twitter.com/EricLevitz/status/1478739257552474117 …

Don't Look Up is a bad climate allegory. A big part of why decarbonization is hard is that there's no "do or die" deadline, and each individual emissions-reducing reform is negligible - which makes it easy for even the most aware to deprioritize climate https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2022/01/dont-look-up-climate-metaphor-review.html … pic.twitter.com/y9QgQ0jaRD

2/ I think one of the benefits of the comet analogy is it brings the foreground the idea that the people on the "other side" are abject morons, and for Netflix viewers that is probably a satisfying feeling

The movie isn't saying "climate is like planet-killing comet," it's saying USA political system & culture are so dysfunctional they wouldn't even be able to handle a clear, easy to defeat threat like planet killing-comet (much less a more complex problem).

Exactly so. Our response to the pandemic is the real-world comparison. While the solution is not as clear as nuking a comet, masks, social distancing and vaccines are a lot simpler than climate solutions.
