When Mailer punched out Gore Vidal at a party, Vidal, while still prone on the floor, quipped, "Norman, once again words have failed you."

Is Norman Mailer being cancelled? Or is his type of literary celebrity, tied to topical news & public feuds, inherently transitory.https://jeetheer.substack.com/p/the-famous-and-the-unread?r=bh54&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=email …

I loved that bit, but I suspect the feud was news to most viewers. SCTV writers often were more erudite than the audience. (I also remember Joe Flaherty as WFB invoking Malachi Martin!)

This is still so damn funny, it wouldn't be done today, not in the least because nobody under the age of 40 knows who Norman Mailer and Gore Vidal were.
-
Am 35, can confirm, however that skit from SCTV is hilarious.

For me, the sign of Mailer’s fame was that Life Magazine hired him to write about the moon landing in 1969 and put *him* on the cover, not an astronaut or, say, the moonpic.twitter.com/qSOTB9iSU7

I never saw any photo of his until now, but I remember how impressed I was by the title, “Of a fire on the moon”.
