so funny that everyone on here is always like lol aaron sorkin is such a phony yet also totally believes that mark zuckerberg invented facebook because he couldn't get laid, which is just something sorkin made up

We have to kill the Sorkin inside our brains, agreed.

For me it's about knowing the difference between the fake and the real. I have zero problem inventing stuff to make biofilms or political dramas more entertaining. You want truth, watch a documentary

I feel like that distinction is becoming blurry for a lot of people. It's notable that many college students now refer to text books as "novels"

Talk to some university profs. It's become very common in last 5 years or so.

100%. Novel has become synonym for book, much to academia’s chagrin.

I guess my next question is whether they still understand the difference. Like southerners who call all soda "coke" but then obviously understand that a Coca-Cola coke is not the same as a Sprite coke

Almost. They don’t call textbooks (like a Psych 101 textbook) novels. They do call books assigned for class that are not novels novels. Nonfiction, verse, doesn’t matter. The Odyssey. Guns, Germs, and Steel. Long books = novels. (But not textbooks in my experience or hearing.)

My guess: War and Peace has many pages. War and Peace is a novel. Textbooks have many pages. Therefore textbooks are novels.
