      The great insight of Samuel Delany is that in s.f. figurative language is often literal. "Her world exploded," means something different in a mundane novel than in an s.f. novel.

      There are phrases in Bruce Sterling’s ZEITGEIST that I didn’t realize were meant to be taken literally until well into the novel.

      It's a very powerful form of literary estrangement. Early in Book of the New Sun, Severin refers to his late lover as "the Thecla who lives inside me." Later we realize this is literally true.

          Great example in the wild. The titular therapist in Wolfe’s "The Death of Doctor Island" is another great example.

          He also draws on this for his linguistic jokes and puzzles. Although he (presumably deliberately) never uses the word itself in the books, the Cumaean has the physical form of a pythoness.
