Most of Tolkien's efforts were dedicated to his legendarium, in which the tropes were mostly pulled from 18th and 19th conceptions of "epic" literature (Ossian, Niebelungenlied, Frazier)... I think its important to note that the Hobbit and LoR are unusual.

I would disagree, slightly. His efforts spanned 60 years; he started by trying to work through his experience in the trenches, it evolved in to creating a "native" myth for England, and concluded with an effort for him to reconcile myth with his Catholic faith.
