At what point does science fiction simply become a different kind of fantasy? I don’t know how possible it is for the genre to get too far ahead of where we are right now.

That's Arthur C. Clarke's famous rule: any sufficiently advanced science will be magic.

Right, I have quoted that line many times. But that’s not what I’m talking about! I mean is there science fiction that is trying to concretely visualize life 25 or 50 or thousand years from now? I’m interested in it.

Last and First Men has a vision written by a Marxist that goes up to 2 billion years in the future, Golden Age trilogy for a vision written by an anarcho-capitalist responding to the Marxist that goes about 10,000 years into the future

Yeah Stapledon is the master of this sort of stuff. Also, Jack Vance and Gene Wolfe.

Truly my favorite, I’ve never given Jack Vance a read somehow but Wolfe’s whole sun series was amazing

Wolfe is fantastic. I don't see anyone having mentioned Vernor Vinge in the thread, particularly his Zones of Thought series starting with A Fire Upon the Deep.
