I fantasized in 2020 that the Covid incompetence came from the top—that Trump, who was ideologically opposed to competence, was the reason the US Covid response was so terrible. What we see now is how untrue that was.

I've always seen Trump a symptom more than a cause. Bad 2020 was in part Trump but deeper USA problems (private health care, neoliberal ideology, federal/state divide, weak state competence, lack of social trust) were always big big problems.

You were clearly correct. I had thought the organs of technocratic governance (esp the CDC) were safe, or at least salvageable, but apparently not.

I did overestimate competence of Canada & some of the European countries, not realizing how hollowed out health care systems were. There's going to be a lot of comparative studies when this is over.
