I'm too tired right now, but I think the analysis of German results is nonsensical/uninformed. CDU/CSU are plenty right of center and AfD isn't a party of conservatives in the traditional sense/certainly not one from which CDU could meaningfully recapture votes.

I’ve spent recent years wishing we had a parliamentary system for that very reason. Too binary around here.

The danger in two (or two-and-a-half like the uk) party systems is being taken over by lunatics not losing vote share to them

But also we did this news cycle about the center left like two years ago back when trump was president and Boris hadn’t lit his career on fire for a Christmas party, so not sure this is a long-term trend.

CDU/CSU can't get AfD voters . They'd completely collapse if they tried. Outside of the AfD base the party is deeply hated and its only hardened thanks to the pandemic. AfD has around a 10-12% voter base ( regionally more or less ) and those are unreachable for everybody else.
