Meanwhile the Prime Minister of Finland is 36 years old -- literally young enough to be the grand daughter of this cohort.

Genuinely bewildering how we arrived at this point. America is in fact *younger* than most other G20 countries.

It's symptomatic of the weakness of USA political parties that they are instruments of party elders and don't have much institutional purpose. In other countries, older leaders are pushed into retirement & younger cohorts cultivated in interest of parties.

Well that’s the funny part, the candidate selection process is *far* more democratic here than elsewhere, the people have spoken in a clear voice: we love our old politicians

yeah I agree with all the complaints about our gentrocracy, but imo this has more to do with the median voter being in their mid 50's than anything else

Our parties are weak because we have terrible state laws which allow anyone off the street to vote in primaries. It’s insane. Parties should choose their own nominees. #BringBackSmokeFilledRooms

Nixon was right: “good God we've got many [republicans] over 70 that I hadn't realized... they're too old, too old... I think in the house and senate you oughta be out of there by 70... nobody should run for the house [for first time] if he's over 40"pic.twitter.com/bVwAQHN1rG

Hate to say it, but I completely agree with Nixon on this. Congress should have term limits and a mandatory retirement age. No one should serve more than 18 years or past age 70.

Do those parties have a "young" section, which has some autonomy and power? Well, the question is moot, because everything is single-seat districts. So, the one with most financial resources becomes candidate in the district. In a system with multiple seats per district, 1/n

the "young" section can have, for example, list place 3 and 5 (assuming the number of candidates is 15, and the party has 30 percent of voters). This ensures that at least one member of the "young" section will be elected. 2/2

They cling to power because of the excellent no-cost health insurance and pensions, both of which are practically impossible to get in the US. Only half kidding.

In other countries they have proportional representation, thus allowing more easily the existence of more than two parties, and giving party lists priority over incumbents. Entrenched Incumbents are a feature of the US voting system
