      1. Peter Sellers has an awkward cameo in Get Back. He showed up at the studio while the Beatles were uncertain of their fate after George Harrison briefly left the band. His appearance is a reminder though of how the band is part of the history of comedy as well as musicpic.twitter.com/mMJCdOAviZ

      2. We all know about the British Invasion as a musical story: the Beatles, the Stones, the Who. But, less visible in North America, this efflorescence overlapped with the great flourishing of English comedy: The Goon Show, Sellers, eventually Python.

      3. There were multiple links between the comedy explosion & music explosion. Both owing a debt to musical hall & nonsense literature, records as a major venue for comedy in that era, George Martin as a producer for Goon Show & other comedians before becoming Beatles impresario.

      4. Also stylistic links: love of word play, slyness, cheekiness, dallops of absurdity. Yellow Submarine was Python before Python. As Louis Menand notes in Free World, Beatles were masters of comedic press conference.pic.twitter.com/DURYHzWbqQ

          5. At one point in Get Back, Ringo suggests they do a silent movie. And the ending of the documentary, with the absurdly helmet London bobbies getting the run around is a late period Chaplin movie. Naturally Harrison would later produce Life of Brian.

          6. For more on the Beatles as comedian, and many other fab four thoughts about Get Back, listen to the podcast I did with @bellye66https://jeetheer.substack.com/p/podcast-meet-the-beatles?r=bh54&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=email …

Not to mention George Harrison and Handmade films funding some of the comedy films that came out of the Python stable and beyond

We went back and watched Hard Day’s Night and Help! after watching the Peter Jackson documentary. Lots of very Monty Python sort of silliness going on in both, still some years before Python.

Arguably Ringo's most important contribution to the group

Hard to imagine that Gilliam's collages weren't influenced by the cover of Sgt. Pepper...at the very least, it helped create an audience that recognized & responded to that aesthetic.
