I agree the climate provisions need to happen yesterday, but taking an offer that results in an effective election year tax hike for families with minor dependents ultimately puts those provisions at risk.
-
Manchin’s fit is personal pique, not WH holding line on immediate material benefit for voters. Trying to keep CTC in was the right call.

I love this whole "You priorities can be dropped, but MINE are actually important!" It's all important.

I think we also need to know what "climate stuff" Manchin agreed to. He's been intransigent on many necessary climate reforms, and really this whole episode suggests he was never negotiating in good faith in the first place.
-
Besides, as others point out, why would we believe Biden wasn't willing to take it? There are no indications that Manchin's hard line on CTC drove Biden to consider abandoning discussions.

I thought the CTC was pretty well structured (fully refundable etc), and it was childcare, family leave, & to a lesser extent pre-K had the holes
-
I also don't think the money on those three provisions adds up to $1.8T, wonder what else was in it

Take this bill and try to get Romney's child tax credit through without Manchin
