I much prefer conservative attacks on Reconstruction to the CRT debate or endless 1619 nitpicking. this way, there's no ambiguity: you do not believe in — or at least, prefer historiography that denies — the full humanity of black people. ok, i got it! simplifies everything.

not that i know of! but i certainly saw the Andrews piece making the rounds... she's in good standing. and the TAC podcast just did a segment on it.

Seems like Andrews has more integrity than someone like Douthat though. Idk what he thinks of Reconstruction but he clearly has very exclusionary views on race and ethnicity that he sweetens for liberal readers with self-deprecation and predictable both-sides gestures

I grew up in the south in the 80s and graduated HS in early 90s, absolutely got the overarching narrative that northerners came in and “ruined “ everything in 2nd half of 19th C. Looking back I can’t recall exactly was what ruined, other than a “generally good way of life”

Wasn’t until college (in northeast) that I took a history class that explicitly considered -why- the north sent troops to south after civil war
