The main reason to talk to ideological foes is the same reason as much conversation -- curiosity about other people. There is no necessary political benefit to it.https://twitter.com/SamAdlerBell/status/1471275650019434499 …

You know, I enjoy talking to ideological opponents, especially if they’re smart, but I really don’t fetishize these encounters as “the solution to what ails us” or whatever liberals say. I don’t even think it’s such a virtue. I just enjoy it. Feels more like a perversion to me.

The specific type of conversation that matters is questions and answers. An exchange of declarations is well-nigh pointless. Only the Q&A can affect things.

It also either convinces you of their side or sharpens your argument. Either way, seems healthy for perspectives not to be insular.

Being able to articulate the other side's arguments, from THEIR point of view, is a proven negotiation strategy. It's worth doing, but you can't negotiate with someone who isn't listening to you.

That seems awfully highbrow compared to it being, *checks notes*, a perversion. Wait, wut?
