Not sure it's just performative. The mindset on the right IS largely "If it doesn't affect me personally, it's not a big deal" so, they're *genuinely* unswayed by stats showing 800k deaths, massive hospitalizations until it's someone they know.

On the other hand I think the writer has a tiny bit of a legitimate point regarding inability to rationally assess risk-beneft among the professional/managerial classes, that is a problem in some cases. But he seems to be on the opposite end of the spectirum.
