I don’t really buy any structural or economic determinist accounts of the Great Awokening. It happened because determined activists kept pushing an ideological agenda for three decades and drove out those who would constrain them. That’s it.

Why did the activists do this? Pure unmotivated malice, like Iago's grudge against Othello? Were they, unique among humans, unaffected by structural and economic factors?

I think the vast majority of them genuinely believed they were doing good, and on the Right Side of History etc.

However, I disagree with Wes. I think the war in Iraq and the 2008 definitely helped undermine belief in liberalism (not political liberalism in the US sense but The Liberal Order).

Also: Obama presidency simultaneously drove the rise of white identity politics on the right & intersectional IdPol on the left - not b/c of O. himself, but b/c of a sense that true revolution was possible & lingering inequities (of race, gender etc.) couldn't be tolerated

At some point in the early 2010s, mainstream progressive media took a sharp left turn on cultural issues & started to take dictation from left-wing activists & blogs

In my view, the personal convictions of Catherine Lhamon and Vanita Gutpa are more important than any of what you've just spelled out. Their beliefs pre-existed all the events you referenced.

But people with similar convictions held important posts in the Clinton administration. These ideas had to fall on fertile soil.

Right because activists captured territory in media and culture they didn't possess in the 90's. This process was unrelated to Iraq, the general state of liberalism etc.

How involved have you been in activism? As far as I can tell, activists can't gain ground unless there's some widescale event or social experience that makes people more receptive to their arguments.

So the Dear Colleague came out at a time when the number of reported rapes in America had declined by 85 percent since 1980. There was a change in perception guided by activist movements influencing media coverage, not a change in social experience.

Not long afterward, the proliferation of microaggression discourse reformatted the extent of psychological trauma and harm being inflicted on POC, etc. These changes don't track to the macro political events of the previous decade.

The Internet is a widescale event or social experience which was barely anywhere in the early 90’s and nearly everywhere by 2011.. platform for emotional contagion, context collapse, (overly, loosely, hyper) associative thinking,
