Which left-wing people think it is regressive, exactly? I've heard that argument from a lot of conservative Democrats.

The only left-wing person I can think of who I know argued this is Matt Bruenig.

What galls me is that in every other context we're told not to let the perfect be the enemy of the good and yet here we're told it's either a perfectly crafted solution or nothing at all. Maybe forgiving everyone's debt isn't the 100% optimum solution but it's a good enough one.

Especially if any of the alternative proposals rely on trying to pass something through a dysfunctional Congress. That's pretty much a non-starter as the last year has shown. Dems can't even get wildly popular initiatives like Medicare negotiating lower drug prices though.

The issue is that if you forgive the debt you are just encouraging future students to get more debt in the hope that it will also be retired, without fixing the problem of skyrocketing costs.
