The power of the dog is a good movie, if you can get past what an frustratingly-constructed movie it is

Jane Campion, gesturing to the butterfly labelled "pensive withholding of information against an austere and repressive landscape": is this cinema?

also, and I agree that this is a niche complaint, but: the banjo playing is not really the sort of thing you'd be likely to hear a banjo doing in 1925

Are you the type of guy who complains that actually Scott Joplin doesn't fit the 1930s milieu of The Sting?

Jack HamiltonVerified account @jack_hamiltonthe music in PERRY MASON is driving me nuts. terence blanchard's score is great but it's firmly post-bop for a show set in 1932. now in ep 2 there's a church scene with a b-3 playing even though the b-3 wasn't introduced until 1954 (hammond didn't even start until 1935)Show this thread2 replies 0 retweets 3 likes -

To some degree, you have to put aside any historical consciousness while watching almost any movie. There are a few exceptions

Are there historical dramas that get this right? I don't mind it, exactly (I really liked the banjo playing, there should be more of it in movies) but I do notice it

not really. even inside llewyn davis, which is one of my favorite music movies and better at this than most, offers an early 1960s greenwich village folk scene in which every singer is somehow heavily influenced by jeff buckley

Also everyone is weirdly apolitical, which I don't think was the case.

"What if the 60s, but apolitical" is such a vibe for hollywood
