BTW, every single one of the people claiming that "What if China invades Japan?" is a stupid unrealistic hypothetical is simply ignorant and uninformed, because there is a chance China might invade some Japanese islands that the U.S. has explicitly pledged to help defend.https://twitter.com/observingjapan/status/1469785188225929218 …

The head of Japan's navy once put it to me privately that a Taiwan forced under PRC control would be a strategically unacceptable "dagger aimed at the heart of Japan," just for starters. Hey, maybe his view isn't the last word! But it's a weird thing to be glib and risky about.

Abstract notions of "who should be responsible for what" seem like an inadequate frame for considering the concrete life/death of millions from spectre of regional war. The US defense umbrella exists, and discussion needs to be framed around what exactly happens if it went away.

I dunno if 70 years = mature. One party has led the country since WW2 minus 4 years. A party founded by a war criminal. And the war criminal's grandson was the last prime minister. And Abe said he got into politics because he was mad a classmate said grandpa was war criminal.

I'm not saying that there's any likelihood of the empire returning but like ya it was concerning. But like that whole trying to militarize Japan by grandson of a war criminal was a recent thing not ancient history. (Japan is a stable democracy though I'll grant you.)

Maintaining military capable of protecting Japan against Russia and China without the US would imply level of militarization of the society which is not compatible with either democracy or current economy. Securing independent supply chains will also inevitably require an empire.
