The guilt is being (as per your first tweet) a tankie or a mainstreamer of tankie ideas. In other words a communist or fellow traveller. The analogy with McCarthyism is exact.

Jeet, if you are so ashamed of your policy positions that even to.admit to them in public feels like "guilt" to you, and even being asked about them feels like persecution, perhaps the problem is not with your interlocutor.

My policy position is that people shouldn't answer absurd questions seriously nor allow absurd questions to be used a rhetorical bludgeons to mainstream threat inflation. I'm happy to debate this policy.

The question of whether the US should go to war should China attack a treaty partner seems serious to me.

By that logic another serious question would be "If China attacked Canada should USA retaliate?" That's not, in fact, a serious question.

Because we have enough real problems to discuss without inventing virtually impossible hypotheticals. Life is not, ultimately, debate club.

What does "nontrivial" mean? I've been trying to get answers. I brought up Canadian case because Noah & others moved from beyond specific (wildly unlikely) scenario to principle about standing with treaty allies.https://twitter.com/HeerJeet/status/1469728958975463427 …

What do you think of as the likelihood that China will invade Japan in, say, the next 20 years? 100%? 50%? 25%? 10%? Give me a number.

The Canadian case seems fine to me, it's a valid question if you're trying to probe the limits of someone's rhetorical commitment to pacifism.

Are we discussing pacifism or whether USA policy (and debates about policy) should be grounded in real threats as against wildly hypothetical scenarios?
