"Oh of course I'm antiwar, because all my friends are antiwar, and war is, like, so lame, you know, but like, wouldn't it also be cool if Country X totally invaded and conquered Country Y? I mean, Country Y has weird food, they kinda deserve it. Anyway let's go to the mall!"

What do you think of as the likelihood that China will invade Japan in, say, the next 20 years? 100%? 50%? 25%? 10%? Give me a number.

Suppose it's 0.1%. is it then not worth considering as a hypothetical in order to establish someone's theory of just war? Should our moral principles only be explored using highly likely war scenarios?

I think the creation of highly unlikely hypothetical scenarios to justify militarism has a bad history. See Dick Cheney's one percent doctrine.

You evaded my earlier question. You haven't said what you think are the actual odds of China invading Japan. Also: a news program discussing current events is not a seminar on Kant.

I don't know the chance, and I am not so arrogant as to be willing to throw out a number with any degree of certainty. Now answer my question.

I answered your question: I don't think a discussion of current events on radio is under the same rules a philosophy seminar. In the context of popular discourse, responding to to an absurd scenario (one you yourself won't commit to a number on) with a mocking answer is fine.

So a radio interview is so lowbrow that hosts aren't allowed to try to establish people's moral principles using unrealistic hypotheticals? Thats a strange hill to die on, but OK.

I don't think the purpose of those hypotheticals is to establish moral principles. It's to promote threat inflation. Being realistic about what these rhetorical moves are all about is crucial.

In fact, the U.S.-Japan alliance is founded on exactly this hypothetical -- not China, specifically, but the U.S. is pledged to defend Japan against any possible attacker. How is asking whether Bruenig wants to repudiate that commitment a stupid or unrealistic question??

Japan literally denied itself an army under the concept that the USA would defend it in all circumstances an army would beniseful, a pretty big deal for Japan I’d think but I’m just a poster and not a big time op-ed thinkerator

Her moral position justifies all sorts of retributive militarism, versions of which are constantly ongoing in various parts of the world. To pretend a specific hypothetical is too unlikely to occur, so the justification doesn't matter, is a deflection from the issue.

You talk about being realistic, but what is the specific harm from this hypothetical that you find realistic? Do you think a preeemptive war against China is plausible?
