Why is it always the Cherokee that get dragged into this mess. What did those folks do to deserve that? And I'm betting none of them want to claim this lady as one of their own.

Wouldn't be surprised to find that her "Cherokee" heritage is just a a family story not a DNA reality. Likely there were both sovereign and slave Cherokees at the time. The whole thing reminds me of the time a politician tried to make pi=3 by law.
