LTE did not argue they founders didn’t know the impact of closing the slave trade. They argued they didn’t know the extent of future importance of slavery to southern economy, and used slave trade ban provision to illustrate abolitionist content in US Const. 1/x

Ugh, previous tweets withdrawn. I read it wrong. My apologies I do think it’s worth noting that even the Pinckneys and their ilk likely weren’t aware of the extent to which slavery would flourish in the south after the cotton gin. 2/x

And I think the extent to which founders believed slavery would proliferate westward is important to understanding how they projected the future of slavery, and how they projected the future of our character as a nation. 3/x

So I’ll just say I blew this one, but I think it would be more telling to know Pinckney’s (and co’s) beliefs about the long term future of slavery post-ban than to know their belief about short-term supply effects 4/4
