Philosophers are markedly worse than the norm, though. It's a disciplinary thing as well as a general academic thing.

Look, no one tries to 'comment on' physics just because they read Brian Greene or whatever. But give a relatively educated person Wittgenstein or Rawls or Nietzsche, and there's no end to their umbrage when an academic philosopher tells them they don't know what they're on about.

Seems to me the proper philosophical attitude would be open to relatively educated people commenting on philosophical texts for the sake of joint inquiry, but maybe I’m wrong.

Yeah, the interesting thing is that philosophy as a way of life is older than philosophy as a discipline. The overlap between the two means there are philosophers, like Nietzsche, who have an audience outside the discipline.
