        Every state had slaves at the time of the Constitution. It died out in half those states largely because it wasn't economical.

        Every framer: we can’t end slavery now. It’s too profitable. Later commenters: how could they have known slavery was profitable?

        Between 1800 and the Civil War the bedrock of Virginia's economy shifted from tobacco (due largely to exhausted soil & mono-cropping) to slave "exports" to the South. The $ value of slaves easily outdid any other "commodity." VA joined the Confederacy to preserve this wealth.
