The serious answer to this is that Dole was so old that the various Old Right strands of Trumpism didn't seem strange to him. It's notable that Dole would even as a mainstream Republican make a few Bircher dog whistles (i.e. his habit of referring to "Democrat wars")https://twitter.com/jtlevy/status/1467542543068024836 …

    Jacob T. Levy @jtlevy
The rest of the old-line Republican establishment was way too quiet about their semi-opposition to (or at least embarrassment about) Trump in 2016, but Dole was almost unique among the old guard in actually clearly *supporting* him. I never understood that.

Bob Dole lived a long, varied life but one significant thing about him is he's good evidence that Trumpism isn't something new in GOP but a longstanding atavistic tendency that returned to dominance.

He simply found Ted Cruz that personally repulsive. Understandable.

Definitely understandable, but how did he not also find Trump personally repulsive?

Dole was a name brand “Republican” first, last, and always. It didn’t matter what was in the box as long as the label said “Republican”

Didn’t the “Democrat wars” line come when he was running for VP, Ford having replaced Rockefeller with Dole on the ticket to appease the right wing of the party?

Dole had dementia which started around age 93-94 (everyone in Kansas knows this). His dementia wasn’t full blown. However, it was serious enough to make many doubt he understood Trump or the Trump administration. He had a devoted entournage that protected him a good deal.
