Bob Dole lived a long, varied life but one significant thing about him is he's good evidence that Trumpism isn't something new in GOP but a longstanding atavistic tendency that returned to dominance.

He simply found Ted Cruz that personally repulsive. Understandable.

Dole was a name brand “Republican” first, last, and always. It didn’t matter what was in the box as long as the label said “Republican”

Dole had dementia which started around age 93-94 (everyone in Kansas knows this). His dementia wasn’t full blown. However, it was serious enough to make many doubt he understood Trump or the Trump administration. He had a devoted entournage that protected him a good deal.
