this either a) straightforwardly bans any mentions of slavery or Jim Crow in the classroom or b) implies you can only teach those subjects if you say they were good https://twitter.com/RottenInDenmark/status/1467167294648463360 …

Racialized plantation slavery wasn't really common throughout the world, so even that would be a falsehood.

right, you'd have to do a lying mealy-mouthed take "yeah it wasn't great but pretty much average for the time, no big deal"

I think a teacher could get away with just also teaching the global history of slavery.

Latin America exists but regardless that's the worldwide context. Glad folks are passionate about the need for more world history.

Nor was any kind of slavery common by the middle of the nineteenth century. Only major country I can think of to abolish it later was Brazil.

hopefully, your out in that case could just be like a one-sentence thing: -involuntary servitude was common in many parts of the world -in the US it was radically different, for the following reasons, and its historical legacy remains in the following ways... (then, say whatever)

I feel like "worldwide context" would give an intelligent teacher a lot of leeway: "Slavery and terrible racism existed worldwide, but a particularly egregious brand was institutionalized in the colonies". Context can be pretty damning, if you know your history.
