More importantly, this “leak” is exactly what countries do to goad/smoke out the other side.
That's the problem really. Their weakness makes them more shrill and the lack of sense of sacrifice makes them unaware of the stakes or cost, making them more extremist.
My take is that we’re dealing with threat deflation. Ie, China can take Taiwan any time they want, and neither Taiwan nor we can do much to stop it. The Taiwanese know it, our hawks want to pretend not. Will they? Why not? When? Probably when China starts its Lost Decades.
I don't think hawkish is the word. But less relaxed. It seems like the more the USA talk about defending taiwan, the more relaxed taiwan gets. The goal is to avoid a war all together with deterrence. The coercion in question is actually to adopt a more defensively-oriented and asymmetric military - one which would be *less* capable of going on offense.
