The problem with current calls for progressive or even leftist nationalism is NOT the nationalism but that they are without content. Flag waving & statue building alone doesn't win points. The right's nationalism, by contrast, has content (xenophobia).

I'm probably more amenable to nationalism than most people (in the mode of Benedict Anderson, I think you can't have a functioning modern society without some nationalism. But that nationalism has to have content.

What I find amusing is that this guy was ahead of the curve and now all the smart guy pundits are pitching their own version of this (with Marxist-Leninism replaced by "progressivism"). Good luck!pic.twitter.com/AAVd7mKX1G

Do you see a difference between patriotism and nationalism, or is the former solely a euphemism for the latter?

I honestly think they are synonyms. Attempts to draw a distinction (by Orwell and Lukacs among others) never seems persuasive to me. Patriotism is just high-toned nationalism.
