I don't understand. This is a total straw man of what progressives would like taught in history courses? Is there a citation of anyone saying, "only teach the bad stuff"? People are saying, "you can't only teach the good stuff."

I don't feel it's a straw man. Instead I think many progressives have convinced themselves that current history classes are nationalistic propaganda, and that they have to emphasize anti-patriotic education in order to balance the scales.

C'mon man. "Anti-patriotic education" is a right wing smear, not an honest engagement with what American historians of all stripes do.pic.twitter.com/7sAt5vf631

We should try our best not to make that smear accurate, Jeet

And Jeet, let me say that I think you, personally, have been too eager to advance and embrace an anti-patriotic worldview over the past couple of years. I worried about that because I view you as a key barometer of mainstream progressivism!

I honestly don't know what "anti-patriotic worldview" is. I mean 1619 project gets accused by right of being anti-patriotic but it's a story of national redemption (especially NHJ's introductory essay). If nation includes POC then POC history has to be part of national narrative

I liked that introductory essay, but selling the project based on the idea that slavery represents "the true founding of America" was bad messaging in addition to being a pretty questionable historical narrative, IMO.

The standard approach until very recently was to downplay Native & Black history & have Dunning style white wash. It's worth pondering what a wide swath of experience & understanding is sacrificed to fake patriotism.

Can you find a line in NHJ voluminous public commentary where you can point out she is proud of some aspects of USA? All liberals and centrists know America is mix of good and bad, overall a unique collective endeavor in mod history. Where do you see the left acknowledge good?
