The thing that it's probably taken me too long to realize is that persuasion of some also involves the accretion of hatreds elsewhere. If you had asked me ten years ago if this was true I'd surely have said "of course" but now I really feel it

I was lucky enough to be told at one of my first ever academic workshops “you can’t expect everyone to like you.” still think about how much it sucks to be disliked for so little payoff. and this is just among academics not even the broader public!
