The American founding fathers, being human, certainly had mixed motives, some noble & some very sordid. That's worth knowing about but is distinct from an evaluation of their ideas, which also combined nobility with sordidness.

"Can a revolution conceived mainly as sordid, racist and divisive be the inspiration for a nation?" This is literally a question which talks about their ideas. It says revolution, not revolutionaries. He is talking about the actual reasons for the revolution.

But the sordidness etc. is attributes of persons, not ideas -- and in Woods writing, it's the people as well as the ideas that get celebrated.

Yeah, it was essentially a power grab by the bourgeoisie. Just a wildly successful one. You can make a case for it as a step forward from monarchism but it's closer to a civil war within the ruling class than a true revolution

Who said revolution is inspirational? The French revolution is remembered for chopping off heads. The Russian revolution for suppressing its people. The American revolution was no inspiration for blacks. History is a dialogue of the humans writing it. It's not a stone tablet.

The French state has celebrated The Revolution of 1789 since 1870. That's why Bastille Day is a public holiday.
