I agree that it's bad in both senses. But I don't think this is just a product of a desire for band-aid solutions. Much of the left has in fact embraced essentialist ideas about race. Look at Kaepernick's new series, where he says Steve Urkel "inhabits white characteristics."

It's a completely nonsensical statement, but it's totally acceptable today because so many people have gotten so comfortable with essentializing racial identity.
