this is going on in different quarters, with the "popularists" denouncing "woke" as alienating to voters and others saying that even using the label "woke" cedes ground to a reactionary counter-offensive. probably both are correct in some way, but unlikely to persuade

Yeah, any sort of message discipline makes no sense in the broad coalition that is Democratic party (or broader left-liberal alliance). But being in a broad coalition means putting up with annoying people, which no one wants to do.

Even for politicians, the usual course is to try to figure out a way to be all things to all people with vague talk -- stuff like the Sista Souljah moment is less frequent and used for special occasions.
