Pop songs and relentless cross-cutting make this movie seem more confident & coherent than it is. sometimes feels like six hours of really good television packed into a three hour movie.

Not sure why I decided to watch this again. It’s one of my least favorite Scorseses. I always think when it starts that I’m gonna feel differently about it and then I bail. Usually during the opera/cocaine/hellish red scene which is remedial Scorsese.

This is a 2006 movie where there’s a porno theater where they project movies onto a big screen ? Was that still a thing? Pardon me for not knowing.

They sure do a great job of building to that ending, though

One of my boys passed through the room while I was watching this and said “this one’s pretty good, but the pacing is weird.”

Nicholson is… I hate that I even think this… Kind of terrible?

Departed is a good Scorsese movie, but not a great one, and the parts on Curb your Enthusiasm where Larry David is playing a macho/psycho Scorsese gangster are eerily close to what he’s doing here.

Scorsese, Damon, Martin Sheen, Baldwin, Winstone (despite the accent), Farmiga (despite the thankless role) are what keep me coming back. And the final 30 minutes.

Also DiCaprio, correctly cast as a middle class guy pretending to be street

Matt Damon should’ve been up for best supporting actor in this movie, over Wahlberg for sure, and he wasn’t even nominated. The relentless deadpan apple-polishing rottenness of his performance is chilling. A soul-sucking void of bland ambition.

Damon's performance is a real stand-out in the movie, yes.
